OACETT leadership participates in Premier’s Ontario Business Mission to China and Vietnam

Strengthening OACETT’s international focus and partnerships is integral to the Association’s Strategic Plan. It was with this in mind that Greg Miller, C.E.T., CBCO, OACETT president, and David Thomson, CEO, participated, along with 100 business leaders, in the premier’s Ontario Business Mission to China and Vietnam in late 2017.

The Ontario government has participated in several official missions to China, while this was the first official visit to Vietnam for an Ontario premier, and followed closely after the prime minister’s visit earlier in the year.

OACETT’s leadership sees the benefits of such expenditures through face time with the premier, cabinet minister and senior civil servants; networking with Ontario business and college leaders; observing science and technology developments in global markets important to Ontario, including those countries who are, or will soon be, major sources of skilled technicians and technologists emigrating to Ontario (and potentially seeking certification);  examining educational institutions and the potential application of certification of graduates and accreditation of college programs; and the professional development of our volunteer leaders.

Greg spoke about OACETT’s role to 200 Ontario and Chinese business leaders in each of the three cities toured in China (Chongqing, Nanjing, Shenzhen) and then engaged in one-on-one business meetings requested by Chinese officials including educational institutions and hi-tech companies. Other activities included attending the premier’s signing ceremonies of deals concluded, and touring business incubators.

China and, very soon, Vietnam are economic juggernauts with vastly different political systems than ours. Should we be concerned about their growth and domination of global markets in the years ahead?  As one astute federal trade official said, “If you’re running a business and not watching carefully what’s happening in the world, particularly China and Vietnam, then you may not be in business for long.” Hence, in our small way, OACETT as part of its strategic plan, is attempting to be mindful of what’s happening in the world as we seek to serve our membership and the public at large.

If you have any questions or comments about the mission, please do not hesitate to contact Greg at president@oacett.org.
