The first step on your path to getting certified is providing the required documents. These documents include your transcripts, work experience, resume and references. Please click on the dropdown menu below to view the requirements for each document submission.
The following documents are required in order to start your certification application. If your application status is Pending Documents, you must provide documents or references to complete the requirements. You can see which documents are still required in the portal. Once your file is complete, it will be sent to the Admissions Committee for a file review.
Once you submit all your documents and your file review is complete, you will receive an email where any outstanding requirements will be identified. You may need to complete additional academics and/or work experience, but in most cases, only the standard certification requirements are required. It is important to note that you must log into the portal and check your document status.
If you have submitted all the required documents and references, and your status is Requirements Outstanding, your application has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee. You may require additional academics or experience or need to write the Professional Practice Exam (PPE). C.E.T. certification may require a technology report as well. Once again, all outstanding requirements can be viewed on the portal.
OACETT uses professional reference questionnaires along with your job description and resume to assess your experience for the technician or technologist category.
Include the names of two to three people (preferably your current and past supervisor, engineering technologists, technicians, professional engineers or other professionals) who have a good knowledge of your capabilities and work experience. If you are self-employed, you may use clients as references.
References cannot be provided by those who are related to you by birth or marriage.
OACETT will send a confidential reference questionnaire to each of your references. We must receive at least two completed questionnaires to move your application forward to the Admissions Committee. Each job description must have an accompanying supervisor reference.
Arrange for your school to send your official post-secondary transcript (including proof of graduation status and subjects and marks) by email directly to certify@oacett.org. We accept file sharing platforms such as MyCreds.
If your school is unable to send the official transcripts directly to OACETT, take your original to a Notary Public and ask them to make you a notarized copy. Submit the notarized copy to OACETT via mail and retain the original for your records. Many law offices can provide notary services. We accept WES evaluation documents. However, if they do not include the course-by-course information, we will also need the notarized transcripts.
If your original transcripts are not in English or French, translations must be prepared by a certified member of the Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ontario (ATIO) or other equivalent Canadian association of certified translators.
Translation steps include the following:
Your job description, resume and references are required to confirm your minimum of two years work experience.
Submit a job description of your current role with your current employer. If you have not been with your current employer for at least two years, you may provide job descriptions from former employers as well. See the Job Description Guidelines. Please follow the guidelines as closely as possible. If you’re not currently working, or not working in your discipline, refer to the guidelines for further information.
Experience with co-ops, internships, or other similar programs can be counted towards the two-year minimum. Up to one year of co-op of internship experience in an engineering technology or applied science program may be credited if:
If your co-op experience does not fall into either of these two categories, it will be counted at 50 per cent of the time worked, up to a maximum of 6 months.
You must submit a job description for co-op just like any other employer. If you supervisor was a certified member of OACETT or a licensed professional, have them include their membership number and license number (if applicable) alongside their signature on your job description.
