Municipal Infrastructure

Certified members who are qualified to work on municipal infrastructure projects can now earn one of two municipal infrastructure designations.

  • Municipal Infrastructure Inspector (mii)
    • 2 years of experience working on the inspection of municipal infrastructure projects
    • Completion of formal training courses related to municipal infrastructure for a combined total of 25 days minimum. Courses accepted are typically between one day and one week in length each
  • Municipal Infrastructure Contract Administrator (mica)
    • 3 years of experience working on municipal infrastructure projects in a combination of inspection, project management, or contract administration roles
    • Completion of formal training courses related to municipal infrastructure and contract administration for a combined total of 35 days minimum.  Courses accepted are typically between one day and one week in length each.
    • For those with 10 years or more experience working in the municipal infrastructure sector, a credit of 5 training days, may be granted.
    • Completion of a one-day refresher course, to be completed every three years, beginning in 2027.

Modelled on our road construction designation program, this program aims to enhance the quality and value of municipal infrastructure investments related to water, wastewater and stormwater.

Why a Municipal Infrastructure Program?

  • Concern from municipal officials about the quality of projects and the availability of qualified persons to do the work. 
  • Significant investments across Ontario in municipal infrastructure, including water/wastewater systems and storm sewer systems.
  • In-house or contracted-out Contract Administration and Inspection of investments with no certainty that staff are properly trained.
  • Opportunities for members working in infrastructure at municipalities/regions and consulting firms.

Benefits of the Municipal Infrastructure Designation

  • Confirmation that you met the requirements to be designated as a fully experienced and knowledgeable professional that can perform inspection and contract administration on municipal infrastructure related to water, wastewater and stormwater.
  • Increases your Certification value and employability.
  • Reduced annual MI membership dues for those who also hold an OACETT road designation (rcji/rcsi/rcca). 
  • Supports our commitment to uphold the safety, health and welfare of the public and the protection of the environment.

Watch for the “MI Approved” badge on training course emails from OACETT.  Completing these courses will apply towards your academic requirements for mii or mica.
